Books and Ice Cream

Two days ago, I commented that the library in Woodbury is praiseworthy for being under the same roof as an ice cream shop. Then I realized that there are other libraries that I have visited that, although not under the same roof, are not far from my favorite treat.

St. Francis in Anoka County, where staff directed me across a bridge and up the road a short way, where I found an interesting coffee shop...with ice cream! [Sadly, I've learned that this coffee shop has closed.]

Rice Street branch in St. Paul is across the street from perhaps the best chocolate malted I've ever enjoyed.

The Hudson, WI, library is a few short blocks from a wonderful ice cream and candy shop.

Cold Spring, MN, a branch of Great River Regional Library, has its famous bakery...

Marine on St. Croix has an ice cream shop about a "block" away. I forgot to mention it earlier because it was closed on my recent trip; closed, but preparing to re-open. I had ice cream there last summer.

This blogger, like an army, travels on her stomach. If your library is close to good ice cream (or other treats), add a comment. You're likely to get on my "must visit" or "must re-visit" list!

All of this interest in ice cream can probably be traced to my childhood, when the "Sunday afternoon drive with a stop for ice cream" was a weekly event.

  1. We're pretty far down south, but Elkhorn WI has an ice cream shop across the street from the library (and a two bakeries in walking distance!). We are generally considered the most awesome library in our county, so if you ever want to come visit...

  2. How could I have forgotten Linden Hills Library in Minneapolis, just a few blocks from Sebastian Joe's? Ginger ice cream in a chocolate-dipped waffle cone, please!

  3. Oh I miss Bridge Street Coffee in St Francis!

Also, when you hit ECRL's McGregor make sure to stop at the bakery in town there.

    1. Bridge Street Coffee closed? I am so sorry to hear that!
Note to self: bakery in McGregor. Should get there this summer, after my New Hampshire road trip.

  4. Ellen, hi! I'm delighted I found your charming blog. I work over at the Roseville library and actually found it because I blog (called the clerk manifesto) and have been doing, among other things, some rather too exhaustive reviews of a few libraries in Hennepin, and I needed a picture of the Saint Anthony Library, which led to you and your project. I wish I had stumbled on it earlier, but I think google and the internet is a bit too obsessive about funneling everything to where everything has gone in the past, making it hard for people like you (or me) to become the world famous Ramsey County bloggers we should be. Maybe I need to learn new ways of searching. Anyway, I just wanted to say hi and tell you I enjoyed your blog and will be back. I am too shy now to uh, borrow, your picture of Saint Anthony, but drop me a line through work (pwolf... you'll know the rest) if you'd care to chat about the vagaries of our select and miniscule collection of rcl bloggers.

  5. After having you scan my books the other day, Ellen, I knew I needed to go back to see your blog (Evan told me about it last summer before he left for college). I love reading about your visits. I'll share photos this summer of the libraries I visit. Meanwhile, I will continue to enjoy your posts.

  6. Library Jewel, thanks for adding a comment. My "people-recognizing brain cells" work very badly, along the lines of, minutes after you left, thinking "I'm pretty sure that was Evan and Casey's mom." By the time I got that message from my brain, you were long gone, of course. I look forward to seeing the libraries you visit. And the next time you see me in the library, get in my face!
